Sustainable & Made-to-Order FAQ

Nothing we make exists before you order it.
No warehouses. No waste. No fast fashion bullshit.
Here’s everything you need to know — straight.

— The Basics —

What does “made to order” actually mean?

Your item doesn’t exist until you buy it. The moment you place your order, production begins — your piece is cut, printed, and assembled specifically for you. Nothing sits in a warehouse. Nothing is pre-made. It’s yours from the start.

Why don’t you just keep items in stock?

Because overproduction is one of fashion’s dirtiest secrets. Brands that hold stock end up with unsold items that get discounted, incinerated, or sent to landfill. We make exactly what’s needed — no more, no less. Zero excess.

Does made-to-order mean my item is handmade?

Not entirely — but it is individually produced. Each piece goes through a dedicated production run just for your order, rather than being pulled from a bulk batch. It’s a more intentional process than anything mass manufacturing offers.

Will my item look exactly like the product photos?

Yes — with minor natural variation. Because each piece is produced individually, there may be very slight differences in print placement or colour tone. This isn’t a defect — it’s a characteristic of made-to-order production. Your piece is unique. Own it.

— Production & Wait Times —

How long does production take?

Typically 1–3 business days. This is separate from shipping. Your total delivery window is usually 8–15 business days from order to door. Worth the wait.

Why does it take longer than buying from a regular store?

Because we’re making your item from scratch. Fast fashion is fast because it’s made in bulk, in poor conditions, long before anyone orders it. We’re doing the opposite. Slower, better, intentional.

Can I rush my order?

We don’t offer rush production — every order goes through the same careful process. If you have a hard deadline, reach out before ordering and we’ll be straight with you about whether it’s achievable.

What happens if there’s a production issue with my order?

We contact you directly and either remake the item or issue a full refund. No runaround. Quality is non-negotiable.

— Sustainability —

Is made-to-order actually more sustainable?

Yes — significantly. Traditional fashion overproduces an estimated 30–40% of inventory, most of which ends up unsold and discarded. Made-to-order eliminates that waste entirely. We only use what we need, when we need it.

What materials do you use?

Heavyweight fleece, premium cotton blends, and fabrics selected for durability — not just feel. Every composition is listed honestly on the product page. Longevity is sustainability: a piece you wear for years beats a cheap one you replace in months.

Is your packaging sustainable?

We use minimal, recyclable packaging and we’re continuously working to reduce our footprint. No excessive tissue paper, no branded filler, no unnecessary inserts. Just your order.

Do you offset your carbon emissions?

Honestly — no. We believe reducing emissions at source is more meaningful than purchasing offsets after the fact. Our made-to-order model and zero-overstock approach are our primary tools. We’d rather do less harm than pay to appear guilt-free.

Is MorteNoir a fully sustainable brand?

No — and we won’t pretend to be. “Sustainable” is a spectrum, not a badge. What we commit to: zero overproduction, quality over quantity, ethical production partners, and continuous improvement. We’d rather be honest about the journey than greenwash our way to a certificate.

— Deeper Questions —

Does made-to-order mean I can customise my item?

Not currently — our designs are fixed as listed. Made-to-order is a production model, not bespoke customisation. That said, we’re always listening. Reach out or follow us — new directions come from the community.

What happens to fabric offcuts or production waste?

Because we produce in small individual runs, offcut waste is significantly lower than bulk manufacturing. We work with production partners who manage material waste responsibly — not just efficiently.

If I return an item, what happens to it?

Returned items in original condition are assessed individually. We don’t blindly restock and resell. Items that can’t be resold aren’t sent to landfill — we explore donation or repurposing where possible.

Does buying made-to-order cost more?

Sometimes — yes. The price reflects real production, fair labour, and quality materials. Not the false economy of mass manufacturing. We keep pricing as fair as we can while standing behind what we make.

How do I know your sustainability claims are real?

Fair challenge. We don’t hold third-party certifications yet — we’re an independent label, not a corporation with a PR budget. What we offer is transparency: zero-overstock production, honest material listings, and an open door. If something doesn’t add up, call us out. We’d rather be questioned than trusted blindly.
