Sustainable Fashion FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Sustainable Fashion
At MorteNoir, we're committed to creating premium fashion that's kind to the planet. Here are answers to your most common questions about sustainable fashion and our eco-friendly practices.
About Sustainable Materials
What is recycled polyester and how is it made?
Recycled polyester is made from post-consumer plastic waste, such as plastic bottles and packaging. The plastic is collected, cleaned, shredded into flakes, melted down, and spun into new polyester fibres. This process diverts plastic waste from landfills and oceans whilst using significantly less energy and resources than producing virgin polyester. Our recycled polyester performs identically to traditional polyester – it's durable, moisture-wicking, and maintains its shape and colour through countless wears.
Is recycled polyester as good quality as regular polyester?
Absolutely! Recycled polyester has the same performance characteristics as virgin polyester. It's just as durable, soft, and long-lasting. In fact, polyester can be recycled multiple times without losing quality, making it an excellent sustainable choice. Our recycled polyester garments feature brushed fleece linings, moisture-wicking properties, and vibrant prints that last.
What are the environmental benefits of recycled materials?
Using recycled polyester reduces our carbon footprint by up to 75% compared to virgin polyester production. It diverts plastic waste from landfills and oceans, uses less water and energy in production, and reduces dependence on petroleum-based raw materials. Each recycled polyester garment we create helps close the loop in fashion's circular economy.
Do you use organic cotton?
Many of our products feature premium cotton and cotton blends. We're continuously working to increase our use of organic and sustainably-sourced cotton across our collections. Our cotton products are chosen for their quality, durability, and comfort.
About Our Products
Which MorteNoir products are made from sustainable materials?
Our recycled polyester collection includes hoodies, sweatshirts, joggers, baseball jerseys, and zip hoodies – all made from 100% recycled polyester. Look for "recycled polyester" in the product description to identify our eco-friendly pieces. We're continuously expanding our sustainable offerings.
How do I care for recycled polyester garments?
Recycled polyester is easy to care for! Machine wash cold inside out to preserve prints and colours. Tumble dry on low or hang to dry. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. The material is designed for longevity and maintains its quality through regular washing. Proper care extends the life of your garment, which is the most sustainable choice of all.
Will the prints fade or crack over time?
Our all-over prints are applied using advanced printing techniques designed for durability. When cared for properly (washing inside out in cold water), the prints maintain their vibrancy through countless wears and washes. The faded aesthetic on some designs is intentional and won't deteriorate further with normal use.
Are your products suitable for athletic activities?
Yes! Our recycled polyester products feature moisture-wicking properties, making them excellent for athletic activities. The baseball jerseys include UPF 50+ sun protection, whilst the brushed fleece items provide warmth without bulk. They're designed for both performance and style.
Sustainability & Ethics
What is MorteNoir doing to reduce environmental impact?
We're committed to sustainable practices including using recycled materials, creating durable products designed to last, offering timeless designs that won't go out of style, and continuously evaluating our supply chain for improvements. We believe true sustainability means buying less but buying better – creating pieces you'll wear for years.
Are your products ethically made?
We work with reputable manufacturers who adhere to ethical labour practices. We're committed to transparency and continuously improving our supply chain standards.
Do you offer a recycling programme for old garments?
Whilst we don't currently have a take-back programme, we encourage customers to donate unwanted garments to charity, participate in clothing swaps, or explore textile recycling options in their local area. We're exploring circular fashion initiatives for the future.
What's the difference between sustainable and fast fashion?
Sustainable fashion focuses on quality over quantity, uses eco-friendly materials, creates timeless designs, prioritises durability and longevity, and considers environmental and social impact. Fast fashion emphasises rapid trend turnover, uses cheaper materials, encourages frequent purchasing, and often has higher environmental costs. At MorteNoir, we create pieces designed to be worn and loved for years, not just one season.
Shopping & Sizing
How do I choose the right size?
Each product page includes detailed size charts with measurements. Our unisex items are designed to fit everyone comfortably. We recommend checking the specific measurements for each product, as sizing can vary by style. When in doubt, size up for a more relaxed fit.
What's your return policy for sustainable products?
Our sustainable products follow the same return policy as all MorteNoir items. We want you to love your purchase! Check our Returns & Exchanges page for full details.
Do sustainable products cost more?
Whilst sustainable materials can have higher upfront costs, we believe in making eco-friendly fashion accessible. Our prices reflect quality, durability, and environmental responsibility. A sustainable garment that lasts for years offers better value than cheaper alternatives that need frequent replacement.
Care & Maintenance
How can I make my clothes last longer?
Wash less frequently (spot clean when possible), use cold water and gentle cycles, turn garments inside out before washing, air dry when possible to reduce energy use and fabric wear, store properly on hangers or folded, and repair small issues promptly rather than discarding. The longest-lasting garment is the most sustainable one!
Can I iron recycled polyester?
Yes, but use low heat settings. Recycled polyester can melt at high temperatures, so always use the lowest heat setting or steam. Most of our recycled polyester items are wrinkle-resistant and don't require ironing.
What detergent should I use?
We recommend eco-friendly, biodegradable detergents without harsh chemicals. Avoid fabric softeners as they can reduce the moisture-wicking properties of performance fabrics. Cold water washing with gentle detergent is best for both your garments and the environment.
General Sustainable Fashion
What is circular fashion?
Circular fashion is a system where products are designed, produced, and used in ways that allow materials to circulate in the economy for as long as possible. This includes using recycled materials, creating durable products, enabling repair and reuse, and eventually recycling garments at end of life. It's the opposite of the linear "take-make-dispose" model.
How can I build a more sustainable wardrobe?
Buy fewer, higher-quality pieces that you'll wear frequently, choose timeless styles over fast trends, invest in versatile items that work multiple ways, care for your clothes properly to extend their life, repair rather than replace when possible, buy secondhand when appropriate, and choose brands committed to sustainability. Quality over quantity is key.
What should I look for when shopping sustainably?
Look for recycled or organic materials, transparent supply chain information, quality construction and finishing, timeless designs you'll wear for years, brands with clear sustainability commitments, and certifications like GOTS, OEKO-TEX, or Fair Trade. Ask questions and support brands that provide answers.
